This type of visa allows people who produce income in their country of residence to move to Italy. This situation applies to people who have decided to retire.
Under Italian law (No. 286/1998) a non-European citizen (for example, a visa applicant) is required to provide proof that he is dependent on an income to help him stay in Italy without working on (determining the amount of this income from the Italian consulate located in the country that comes of the applicant for residency). This varies greatly from country to country.
This money does not have to be generated by a job. Retirement is a good example of the types of money that might make someone eligible for an optional resident visa. Other types of income include income generated through leases and dividends (if the applicant is not employed through a corporation or holding an CEO position).
The steps you must follow to obtain an optional residence visa in Italy are:
Write an application to the Italian consulate in the country of origin and attach all necessary documents such as a copy of the applicant's passport, a document showing that the applicant generates the income required to live in Italy and a document proving that the applicant is able to secure housing and live in Italy (for example, a property purchase or rental contract ).
If the documents submitted comply with the conditions established by the applicable regulations, the Italian Consulate will grant the applicant an “entry visa” which will allow the applicant to enter Italy and apply for an optional residence visa.
The voluntary residence visa application must be filled out within 90 days of issuance of the entry visa. This application is submitted to the police station called “Chiastura” (the Chiastura police station is located in the Italian city and is the place from which the applicant wants to obtain the voluntary residence visa).
