Canadian citizenship law, also referred to as Canadian citizenship, is a legal status that gives a natural person specific rights and responsibilities in Canada. It arose in 1947, and became an important milestone in the process of Canada's independence from the United Kingdom with the entry into force of the first Canadian Citizenship Act. Canadian citizenship is now governed by the Citizenship Act 1977, which has undergone several significant amendments since it came into force. The federal courts, through their jurisprudence, have also contributed to clarifying the legal definition of Canadian citizenship.
Canadian citizenship is generally obtained by birth in Canadian territory (territorial right) or by birth abroad of at least one Canadian parent (by jus sanguinis), with some exceptions. It can also be granted to a foreign child adopted by Canadians, or even granted by naturalization to a permanent resident who has resided in Canada for a sufficient period of time and meets a certain number of criteria.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada is the department in the federal government responsible for actions related to citizenship, such as verification, granting, repudiation or revocation of citizenship, as well as reintegration.
