History taking and clinical examination to be done by the internist. Complete blood test to check for infection, ESR and CRP tests, uric acid test to rule out gout, RF analysis to rule out rheumatoid disease. Moreover, sample can be taken from the joint to be examined in the laboratory as well as an X-ray of the joints might be a choice.
