I will just get straight to it. I am a British...
I will just get straight to it. I am a British expat living in the UAE and my husband of 13 years is Jordanian. Without my knowledge or consent, my husband secretly married another woman who is also from Jordan and resides here in the UAE. He has been lying about it for months. According to him, he married her in June within the UAE. I don't know if this is true because he could have easily married her in Jordan without my knowledge over the summer. I just want to know my rights as his first wife under the law of the UAE and Jordan. Did he need a document signed by me that I have full knowledge of the marriage or is it lawful that he can do this behind my back? We have three children together by the way.

We would like to inform you that according to the UAE Personal Status Law, if the marriage is Islamic, then the law does not require obtaining the consent of the first wife to marry a second wife. Therefore, the law does not criminalize marriage, and this is similar to civil marriage, which prohibits polygamy.
In regard to the wife, she has all the rights stipulated in the law regarding marital alimony, as Article 66 stipulates that the wife’s maintenance is obligatory for her husband according to the correct contract if she surrenders herself to him, even if by a ruling.
Article 55 stipulates the rights of the wife over her husband, which are: alimony, not preventing her from completing her education, not preventing her from visiting her assets, branches, and siblings, and asking them for their kind assistance, not being exposed to her own money, not harming her financially and morally.
Article 72 focused on a woman’s right to work, stating that “It is not considered a breach of the obligatory obedience if she goes out to work if he marries her while she is a worker, or agrees to work after marriage or stipulates that in the contract, and the authorized person must verify this condition when concluding the contract, all of that.” Unless something occurs that makes the implementation of the condition contrary to the interest of the family.
Note that she has the right to housing, and since the Personal Status Law in the Emirates deals with a woman’s right to housing, as Article 74 stipulates that (the husband must prepare for his wife, in his place of residence, an appropriate home that is appropriate to their conditions.)
Article 110
Khul’ is a contract between spouses in which they agree to terminate the marriage contract for a consideration given by the wife.
