What are eye floaters ?
Eye floaters appear small and then slowly spread across your field of vision. Eye floaters often appear as:
Slightly dark spots or ,
Strings or marks, or
Fragments of strings
Eye floaters are not an optical illusion. But they are tiny bits of debris floating around the vitreous of your eyes: the gelatinous part of your eyeball that helps maintain its shape. Sometimes, eye floaters move around it, casting a shadow on the retina. This is what you see.
What causes eye floaters?
Often age-related changes in the vitreous of your eyes are the cause of the appearance of eye floaters. And as you get older, this vitreous jelly weakens: it becomes more liquid, begins to sag and pulls away from the inside of the eyeball, and some of the previous lumps of gel. And the shadows of these scattered pieces are what you see.
Floaters can also occur when the vitreous detaches from the surface of the retina. Stimulating the retina during this process often causes flashes in the eye. Once the vitreous retracts from your optic nerve head, eye floaters can temporarily form a ring.
Treatment of eye floaters
Most eye floaters do not need treatment. Although treating it costs time and frustration, many people are able to ignore it more easily over time.
When eye floaters are too large or too many to impair your vision, your ophthalmologist may recommend surgery or laser treatment to remove them.
Laser treatment of eye floaters
During laser treatment, a private ophthalmologist focuses laser beams on the remains in the vitreous portion of the eye in order to disperse them and make them smaller and less visible.
Laser treatment for floaters is still experimental and not widely used. While some people see improvement after laser treatment, others do not see any significant difference, and the laser can cause damage to the retina if directed incorrectly.
Treatment of eye floaters with surgery
Vitrectomy is a surgical procedure in which the ophthalmologist removes the vitreous in the eye through a small incision, and replaces it with a solution to maintain the shape of the eye. Your body will naturally create a new vitreous body that will gradually replace this solution. Vitrectomy does not always remove floaters completely. New floaters continue to form afterward, especially if the surgery itself causes bleeding and tears in the retina.
While most eye floaters are harmless, the sudden onset of floaters and spots can be a warning sign for treating your eyes. Contact your ophthalmologist when you experience any sudden changes in your eyes. Regular eye exams are also important so that your doctor is aware of any changes and can even help you detect floaters and other abnormalities in your eyes.
