The marriage of a foreign woman to a Kuwaiti does not result in her becoming Kuwaiti unless the Minister of Interior announces her desire to acquire this nationality and the marriage continues for a period of five years from the date of announcing her desire and the Minister of Interior may, before granting her a nationality certificate, decide to deny her the acquisition of Kuwaiti nationality by way of subordination to her husband, and it is also permissible for him to exempt all or part of this period.
If the termination of marriage before the end of the period referred to in the previous paragraph was due to death or divorce, and the foreign woman had a son or children from her husband and maintained her residency in Kuwait until the expiration of this period, then it is permissible to grant her Kuwaiti nationality by decree based on the proposal of the Minister of Interior.
