If you have a residency visa, so you can exit the UAE without cancelling your VISA, if you intend to come back.
But if you exit and stay outside UAE for more than 6 months, then your visa will become invalid.
If your residency is expired then you have to cancel your visa before exiting that's because if you exit without cancelling an employment visa, then your employer would file an absconding case on you and that will affect your ability to return to the UAE on another visa.
