Hi doctor, My name is Sarah. My mum is 58 years old and has diabetics. Since March this year she usually feels bloated and lost so much weight. She has also lost appetite. She barely eats these days and it wasn't like that before. She also finds it hard to excrete (pass out faeces) anytime she goes to the toilet. Also she's always spitting. She has visited 3 specialists but no solution. Please i would be very happy if you can prescribe something that will make her re-gain her weight back and eat well again. She is now very thin and is making me very worried. Please what can she do?

Constipation and weight loss in elderly people
Constipation is considered among one of the most alarming signs in elderly people especially if its associated with significant weight loss and appetite loss. In this case colonic malignancy should be ruled out first before wondering about any medication that can releive her loss of appetite. Of note that diabetes can cause some degree of constipation but it should not be the first explanation giving concern about the significant weight loss that happened to the patient . You should consult Surgeon to perform the required tests and diagnose the problem .
Investiations
After proper physical exam, you should do CBC to detect any anemia, stool analysis to detect blood in the stool and a set of liver and kidney funtions should be done, Colonscope and gastroscope to detect any abnormalities in the colon.
