Swallowing a coin, What to do?
Most toddlers use to put a lot of things in their mouth and accedentally swallow it. Normally the swallowed object will go through the esophagus to the bowel and excreted with his stool in a matter of 2- 3 days according to the size of the object. Alarming signs that should alert for medical consultation are the chocking and breathing difficulty in which the baby turn to be blue and this indicates that the coin is obstructing the major air way there you should call for emergency personnel and do chest and back compressions for your baby to help dislodge the object. on the other hand if the baby had a brief chocking then returned to be normal you should ask for medical consultation that the coin could have gone to his lungs and this may cause repeated chest infections. Another alarming symptome is the continious drooling and open mouth in addition to repeated vomiting that will indicate that the coin is lodged in the upper esophagus or stomach and this needs semi- urgent extraction. if non of these sympromes happened then the benign course has been taken by the coin and its in its way towrd his anus to come out with stool that you should observe to detect the coin. If your child started to complain from severe abdominal pain then you should consult a pediatric surgeon to detect any bowel obstruction or perforation caused by the coin.
Required investigations
After the proper physical exam you should do a chest and abdomen standing X ray to detect the location of the coin. if it was in the lung or upper esophagus an endoscopic manouver will be done by the specialist to extract the coin.
Alarming signs
  • Cyanosis
  • Chocking
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Drooling
  • Repeated Vomiting
  • Severe abdominal Pain

Our advice
You are adviced to keep watching your child behaviour and keep small toyes, coins and penuts a way from him.
