Calcification
is the accumulation of calcium salts in a body tissue. It normally occurs in the formation of bone, but calcium can be deposited abnormally in soft tissue, causing it to harden
Perihilar region of the the lung
The hilum of the lung is the wedge shaped area on the central portion of each lung, located on the medial (middle) aspect of each lung. The hilar region is where the bronchi, arteries, veins, and nerves enter and exit the lungs. So the area that suround the hilum called perihilar region
Causes of lung calcification
Healed infectio calcified granulomata, e.g. thoracic histoplasmosis, recovered miliary tuberculosis
Occupational disease/pneumoconioses
Silicosis
Coalworker's pneumoconiosis
Pulmonary hamartomas
Metastatic pulmonary calcification
Calcium and phosphate metabolism abnormalities such as chronic renal failure, multiple myeloma
Sarcoidosis
Pulmonary amyloidosis
Diagnosis
Depends on the clinical signs and sypmtoms but in general
Chest X-ray
CT scan
Biopsy
