My q. is regarding recurrence of colon cancer. 69 years old man with history of sigmidectomy due to sigmoid adenocarcinoma in 2014. february 2018 cea level was 1.7. september 2019 level is 7.1.
ca19. 9 was 17 became 24
all 3 years ct scan and cea were normal

the recurrence rate ranges between 30-40% after resection
What recommendation for your to survey for recurrence ?
History and physical examination Every 3–6 months for the first 2 years, then every 6 months for up to 5 years
CEA testing Every 3–6 months for the first 2 years, then every 6 months for up to 5 years
Colonoscopy At 1 year after resection, then at 3 years, then every 5 years thereafter
CT chest, abdomen, and pelvis Annually for up to 5 years
What is colon cancer?
Colon cancer is an abnormal and accelerated proliferation of cells in the colon and these cells are not exposed to routine programmed death as happens to normal cells
What causes colon cancer?
Normal tissue changes to abnormal tissue
Genetic predisposition
Oxidation of cells as a result of continuous damage
damaged in the case of smoking
Environmental factors such as toxins, chemicals and radiation
Follow unhealthy diets

What are the stages of colon cancer?
The first stage is the stage of the concentration of the mass in a specific part of the colon and not spread to the neighboring parts
The second phase is the stage of mass multiplication and increase its size in the same place
The third stage is the spread of cancer to the lymph nodes and blood
Stage IV is the spread of cancer to other organs
What is colon cancer treatment?
Surgery is a good option in the early stages of cancer where it is cured
Chemotherapy that would stop the rapid growth of cancer but its side effects are great
Radiotherapy is prescribed for some types of cancer that can not be operated on
Combined treatment which is used as surgery and chemotherapy together or radiation therapy
Palliative therapy that treats symptoms at a later stage of the disease
