What is the treatment of subcunjunctival hemorrhages?

1. Artificial eye drops; like isotears, 3 times a day.
2. Eye drops: that cause vasoconstriction like Zaditor, Mydfrin.
3. Avoid rubbing the eye.
4. Cold compresses: for no more than 2-3 minutes a time.
5. If the patient is taking blood thinner medication it's better to consult the physician.
6. Treatment of High blood pressure.

What Causes Subconjunctival Hemorrhages?

1. Eye trauma can cause a broken blood vessel.
2. A sudden increase in blood pressure that can result from heavy lifting, coughing, sneezing, laughing and constipation.
3. Aspirin or blood thinners such as warfarin (one brand name is Coumadin).
4. Rarely, a blood clotting disorder or vitamin K deficiency (vitamin K aids the functioning of proteins necessary for blood clotting).

How Long Does it Last?

In most cases, it takes seven to 10 days for a subconjunctival hemorrhage to resolve on its own. As the blood gradually disappears with time, the affected area can change color, like a bruise.
