How to treat alopecia areata?

If the affected area is small, it makes sense to monitor the progression of the disease alone, as the problem often shrinks automatically and the hair may grow again.

Some other drugs used are minoxidil, iodine ointment (mumitazone) (steroid cream), irritants (anthraline or local coal tar), localized immunotherapy ciclosporin, and sometimes by combination of treatments. Topical steroids often fail to penetrate the skin deep enough to affect the hair follicles, which are the target of treatment,  and small wounds usually grow back on their own. Oral corticosteroids reduce hair loss, but only during the period taken, these drugs have serious side effects are harmful.
