Treatment of swollen tongue:

• it depends on the cause
• it is important to secure breathing, so if the swelling is affecting the breathing then i recommend you to go to the hospital urgently
• if it was due to an infection it needs an antibiotic after consulting an otolaryngiologist
• an allergic reaction could be the cause so the patient may benifit from antihistamine drugs
• if it is because an abcess or a hematoma, the patient needs a surgical removal of the collection
• if it is due to a benign tumor or malignant tumors of the tongue then a surgical consultion is necessary specially if the problem started few months ago

Diagnosis of swollen tongue:

• clinical history and examination
• tongue ultrasonography
• computed tomography of the head and neck
• MRI of the head and neck if necessary
• complete blood count

Causes of swollen tongue:

• could be due to an infection
• abcess or hematoma collection
• allergic reaction and it affects the whole tongue
• benign or malignant tumors of the tongue
