What is gabapentin?

medications to prevent and control seizures. It is also used to relieve nerve pain following shingles (a painful rash due to herpes zoster infection) in adults. Gabapentin is known as an anticonvulsant or antiepileptic drug.

Why it's used

Gabapentin oral capsule is used to treat the following conditions:

• Seizures: Gabapentin is used to treat partial seizures. It’s taken together with other seizure medications in adults and in children 3 years of age and older who have epilepsy.
• Postherpetic neuralgia: This is pain from nerve damage caused by shingles, a painful rash that affects adults. Shingles appears after infection with the varicella zoster virus. This virus occurs in people who have had chicken pox.

More common side effects/

• dizziness
• tiredness or drowsiness
• loss of coordination
• fever
• jerky movements
• nausea and vomiting
• trouble speaking
• double vision
• unusual eye movements
• tremor
• swelling of legs and feet

Precautions

Before taking gabapentin, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to gabapentin enacarbil; or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.
Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: kidney disease, mental/mood problems (such as depression, thoughts of suicide), use/abuse of drugs/alcohol, breathing problems.

Is it safe to take gabapentin in pregnancy?

There is no yes or no answer to this question. When deciding whether or not to take gabapentin during pregnancy it is important to weigh up how necessary gabapentin is to your health against the possible risks to you or your baby, some of which will depend on how many weeks pregnant you are. Remaining well is particularly important during pregnancy and whilst caring for a baby. It is vital that epilepsy is well-controlled during pregnancy as seizures can harm both the mother and unborn child. For some pregnant women treatment with gabapentin may be necessary.
It is recommended that all women taking anti-epileptic medicines also take high dose folic acid (5mg/day) whilst trying to conceive and during the first trimester of pregnancy. High dose folic acid has to be prescribed by a doctor. For more information, please see the folic acid bumps leaflet.
