Hello doctor, I'm 48 years old, recently I'm suffering a pain on my lower back through to my right bum down to my leg. I feel the numbness on my toe finger or tickling feeling which I don't understand I suffer turning around while I sleep on bed at night. By the wa, in my work I used to stand 8 to 10 hrs. And I'm 90 kilos this time. Does it happen cz of my weight? Pls help me. Thank you.

sciatic pain

  • The goals of nonsurgical sciatica treatments are to relieve pain and any neurological symptoms caused by a compressed nerve root. 
  • heat and/or ice packs  help alleviate the leg pain especially in the initial phase. Usually is applied for 20 minutes, and repeated every two hours.
  • take  Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (such as ibuprofen or naproxen),

  3. Limitations ability to participate in everyday activities
 
Sciatica is often characterized by the following symptoms:
  • pain in one side of the buttock or leg 
  • Pain increased when sitting
  • Leg pain described as burning, tingling, or searing
  • Weakness, numbness, or difficulty moving the leg, foot, and toes
  • difficult to stand up or walk
  • Pain that radiates down the leg and possibly into the foot and toes
L5 nerve root sciatica
  1. the pain  may extend to the big toe and ankle (called foot drop). 
  2. you  may feel pain or numbness on top of the foot, particularly between the big toe and second toe.
 
Certain sciatica symptoms, require immediate medical, and possibly surgical, intervention. These include
  • progressive neurological symptoms ( leg weakness) 
  • and pain in both legs (called bilateral sciatica)
  • or that cause bladder or bowel incontinence or dysfunction
  • or altered sensation in the genital area or "saddle area" it is  cauda equina syndrome. 
  • Infection or spinal tumors .
 
Most Common Causes of Sciatica
  • Lumbar herniated disc
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Isthmic spondylolisthesis
  • Sacroiliac joint dysfunction
 
Risk Factors for Developing Sciatica
  • overweight 
  • smoking
  • If you have fracture in a lumbar vertebra
  • infection in the low back can affect the nerve root and cause sciatica.
  • Pregnancy.
