One autumn I went to spend the hunting season with some friends in a chateau1 in Picardy. My friends were fond of practical jokes. I do not care to know people who are not. When I arrived, they gave me a princely reception, which at once awakened suspicion in my mind. They fired off rifles, embraced me, made much of me, as if they expected to have great fun at my expense. I said to myself: "Look out, old ferret! They have something in store for you." During the dinner the mirth2 was excessive, "Hotel Room" by Mario's Planet is licensed under CC BY-NC 2.0. exaggerated, in fact. I thought: "Here are people who have more than their share of amusement, and apparently without reason. They must have planned some good joke. Assuredly I am to be the victim of the joke. Attention!" During the entire evening every one laughed in an exaggerated fashion. I scented a practical joke in the air, as a dog scents game.3 But what was it? I was watchful, restless. I did not let a word, or a meaning, or a gesture escape me. Every one seemed to me an object of suspicion, and I even looked distrustfully at the faces of the servants. The hour struck for retiring; and the whole household came to escort me to my room. Why? They called to me: "Good-night." I entered the apartment, shut the door, and remained standing, without moving a single step, holding the wax candle in my hand. I heard laughter and whispering in the corridor. Without doubt they were spying on me. I cast a glance round the walls, the furniture, the ceiling, the hangings, the floor. I saw nothing to justify suspicion. I heard persons moving about outside my door. I had no doubt they were looking through the keyhole. 1. a large country house 2. Mirth (noun) happiness accompanied by laughter 3. Game (also known as prey or quarry) refers to any animal hunted for sport or for food. 1 An idea came into my head: "My candle may suddenly go out and leave me in darkness." [10] [15] Then I went across to the mantelpiece and lighted all the wax candles that were on it. After that I cast another glance around me without discovering anything. I advanced with short steps, carefully examining the apartment. Nothing. I inspected every article, one after the other. Still nothing. I went over to the window. The shutters, large wooden shutters, were open. I shut them with great care, and then drew the curtains, enormous velvet curtains, and placed a chair in front of them, so as to have nothing to fear from outside. Then I cautiously sat down. The armchair was solid. I did not venture to get into the bed. However, the night was advancing; and I ended by coming to the conclusion that I was foolish. If they were spying on me, as I supposed, they must, while waiting for the success of the joke they had been preparing for me, have been laughing immoderately4 at my terror. So I made up my mind to go to bed. But the bed was particularly suspicious-looking. I pulled at the curtains. They seemed to be secure. All the same, there was danger. I was going perhaps to receive a cold shower both from overhead, or perhaps, the moment I stretched myself out, to find myself sinking to the floor with my mattress. I searched in my memory for all the practical jokes of which I ever had experience. And I did not want to be caught. Ah! certainly not! certainly not! Then I suddenly bethought myself of a precaution5 which I considered insured safety. I caught hold of the side of the mattress gingerly, and very slowly drew it toward me. It came away, followed by the sheet and the rest of the bedclothes. I dragged all these objects into the very middle of the room, facing the entrance door. I made my bed over again as best I could at some distance from the suspected bedstead and the corner which had filled me with such anxiety. Then I extinguished all the candles, and, groping my way, I slipped under the bed clothes. For at least another hour I remained awake, starting at the slightest sound. Everything seemed quiet in the chateau. I fell asleep. I must have been in a deep sleep for a long time, but all of a sudden I was awakened with a start by the fall of a heavy body tumbling right on top of my own, and, at the same time, I received on my face, on my neck, and on my chest a burning liquid which made me utter a howl of pain. And a dreadful noise, as if a sideboard6 laden with plates and dishes had fallen down, almost deafened me. I was smothering beneath the weight that was crushing me and preventing me from moving. I stretched out my hand to find out what was the nature of this object. I felt a face, a nose, and whiskers. Then, with all my strength, I launched out a blow at this face. But I immediately received a hail of cuffings7 which made me jump straight out of the soaked sheets, and rush in my nightshirt into the corridor, the door of which I found open. Oh, heavens! it was broad daylight. The noise brought my friends hurrying into my apartment, and we found, sprawling over my improvised8 bed, the dismayed valet, who, while bringing me my morning cup of tea, had tripped over this obstacle in the middle of the floor and fallen on his stomach, spilling my breakfast over my face in spite of himself. The precautions I had taken in closing the shutters and going to sleep in the middle of the room had only brought about the practical joke I had been trying to avoid.

Guy de Maupassant uses comedy—through the irony of the results of the narrator's own fear and paranoia—to reveal the idea that our fears can prevent us from enjoying our lives and lead us to unwittingly manifest the very situations that we hope to avoid.

Here are the answers for questions 5,6 and 8:5-The plot is unfolding gradually without disclosing any information on the other characters and the surroundings of the main character. The narration is in first-person and we are following the main character’s train of thought which is the main reason for the anxious feelings of the hero to be transferred onto the reader. The main character is paranoid from suspiciousness as from the very start he reveals that treating him with hospitality “at once awakened suspicion in my mind”. This feeling never leaves but it intensifies as he overanalyzes and views every action of the staff and the other guests as suspicious. For instance he misinterpreted their warm welcome as them mocking him “expect[ing] to have great fun at my expense”. He mentions numerous times in various ways throughout the story that he feels anxious from his suspiciousness “I was watchful, restless” and “had filled me with such anxiety”. As the plot slowly unveils the main character remains suspicious and watchful of everything and everyone keeping us on our toes and adding more suspense to the story.6- There are various humorous factors that make the story a comedy, one of them being that the main character likes practical jokes but not at his expense that’s why he’s extra cautious not to end up as the butt of one. His extreme paranoia is funny at times especially when he says to himself to “’Look out, old ferret! They have something in store for you’”. Despite his cautiousness, he still ended up being at the other end of a practical joke that he brought upon himself and the image is so vivid it makes it even funnier as he describes that “…a dreadful noise, as if a sideboard6 … the door of which I found open”. This lengthy and detailed image adds to the humorous atmosphere of the story.8-The flashback is necessary and detrimental to the flow of the story and progression of the plot. Had it not been for the flashback, the main character wouldn’t have thought to move the mattress and bedding in the middle of the room and then the waiter wouldn’t trip and fall on top of him forcing him to go to the corridor in his nightshirt; and experiencing a very funny practical joke (“all of a sudden I was awakened… in spite of himself”). The paranoia of not ending up at the other end of a practical joke was what urged the main character to think back on how to avoid practical jokes and the flashback he had, led to him thinking of this precaution.

We walk and go on in this life, we learn a lot, with every difficulty we go through, we learn a lot, and this is exactly what happened with Muhammad, this pure and pious young man, who used to walk among people, redressing thoughts, he does not hesitate to help others and extend a helping hand to them. One day, while Muhammad was heading to his university, he saw a poor woman sitting on the side of the road, and she was crying hard. Muhammad sat next to this woman and asked her what was wrong with her. She replied with sadness and tears flowing profusely from her eyes that her children had expelled her from the house, and the street and the place where she sat became her only shelter and she has no one to support her now except God Almighty, Muhammad began to calm this poor woman and reassure her that he will have a son who did not give birth to her. He stopped her and took her with him to his humble house where he and his sister lived alone after his parents passed away. He left her at home with his sister and recommended her to his sister well, then went to his university, and his sister took care of the poor old woman and provided her with food and drink, and this continued for months on end. Muhammad was always noticing one of his colleagues who was moved by the features of worry and extreme sadness, and he was feeling very embarrassed for fear that he would ask him about his condition, but one day, his extreme curiosity prompted him to sit next to this young man so that he might be able to help. Indeed, he sat next to him and asked him what was happening with him. He replied that he was guilty and I did not deserve to be sympathetic to him. Muhammad disapproved of these expressions and asked him to calm him down, but the young man told him that he and his brothers angered God Almighty the day they expelled his mother from their house to seize the inheritance, but from the day they expelled her and problems and worries surrounded them from everywhere, and he told Muhammad that he searched for his mother for long days and did not find her, Muhammad suspected that the woman he was looking after in his house might be the mother of this young man. Indeed, he asked him about her description and the place where they left her. The shock was that she was indeed the mother of this young man. Muhammad decided to take the young man with him to the house and told him there is a happy surprise waiting for him in his possession, and when they reached the house, the young man saw his mother in the best condition and asked her to forgive him and took her with him again to the house. The woman and her son thanked Muhammad for his kindness to them, and they told him that he is one of the pillars of goodness who wish their fingerprints would remain in our lives.

Here is an essay about a festival called “Holi”: The Festival of Colors or Holi is a popular Hindu spring festival celebrated in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and countries with large Hindu communities, such as Suriname, Guyana, South Africa, United Kingdom, United States of America, Trinidad, Mauritius and Fiji. Bangladesh and Indian West Bengal festival called Dolyatra or Basanta Otsap. The most famous spring festival is that which takes place in Prague , in places associated with God Krishna: Matura, Vrindavan, Nandagaon and Parsana. These places attract tourists during the season of the Festival of Colours, which lasts here for more than 16 days. The festival takes place in India between the end of February and the beginning of March. "Holi" is primarily a celebration of the harvest season, fertility of the land, farewell to winter and the welcome of spring, but it has religious roots, linked to some Hindu myths that tell about the burning of Holika, the sister of the demon king, hence the name "Holi", although some people attribute the name to the English language, which means "holy". The first manuscript that talks about the Holi festival dates back to writings from the seventh century AD, which referred to an ancient Indian ritual in which people resort to smearing each other's faces with colored powders and throwing perfumes and perfumed water, which is why it was called the Festival of Colors, and it was customary to make colored powders from Natural materials and some medicinal herbs mentioned in "Ayurveda", which is the system of teachings of traditional medicine in India, but with the passage of time began to manufacture dyes from chemical materials, and it was discovered that some of them consist of harmful substances that caused some injuries to the exchangers.
