When Ferdinand de Lesseps started work on building the Suez canal in 1859, the harbour was at first lit by a temporary wooden lighthouse. In early 1869, Khedive lsmail built the port said lighthouse in the form of an octagonal-shape tower (meaning with eight sides) made of strong concrete and iron. It reached 56 metres high, was painted with black and white strips to be clearly seen by daylight, and its flashes were clear for 20 miles for sailors or sea-travellers. In 1955, it used electricity instead of gas, and it continued successfully to serve ships passing through the Suez canal, except for an eight-year pause after the 1967 War. However, by the early 1980s, the lighthouse had become surrounded by buildings on all sides, making it less useful for its purpose. As a result, the city officials planned to build another lighthouse close to port Said stadium and at a distance from the buildings. The original one was about to be destroyed, and it has been turned into government offices recently. Moreover, the 140-year-old port Said lighthouse is protected under the Egyptian law. The Minister of Culture was invited by the city's artists and writers to turn it into a museum as it is part of port said's other historic monuments: for example,Suez canal Authority building, the Port Said Maritime Arsenal, the Clock House, the House of Eugenie, the Catholic churches, the Abbasid Mosque, and the two statues of de Lesseps and King Fouad.
