You can obtain residency in Qatar after obtaining a job in Qatar and then obtaining a work permit. It is the responsibility of the employer to carry out all the procedures required to obtain the necessary residency permit for the expatriate. When an expatriate enters the country for the first time, the employer obtains a temporary entry visa and then converts it into a residence permit. The process usually requires 2-4 weeks and sometimes a longer period. Work applicants may not leave the country during the period of converting the visa to a permit. Once the expatriate receives his residence permit, he can obtain many other services, such as applying for other permits and licenses, signing a housing lease contract, applying for a loan, and many others. Another major advantage of obtaining a residence permit is that it gives the expatriate the opportunity to sponsor his immediate family members (husband, sons, daughters) to join him in living in the State of Qatar (see Family Residency Visa below). The work permit is renewed annually by the expatriate’s employer. Expatriates can also sponsor their first-degree family members. A residence visa must be obtained for each family member, including infants. Residency can be obtained for a period ranging from one to five years and is printed on the passport of each family member.
